Satemin

Back to main page

Satemin is one of the largest of the many circular villages (Rundlinge) in Wendland and is located quite in its center. Historically, every farmyard was managed by one peasant family, but today, mostly employees, freelancers and second home owners live here. Satemin is – unlike e.g. Lübeln – not particularly geared towards tourism and not at all  an open air museum.

The great fire of  August 15 in 1850 destroyed almost the entire village. It must have been a major effort to rebuild all houses within only four months. All half-timbered houses are thus almost identical in construction and are under monumental protection. Today, Satemin is a destination for many travellers and one of the many small cultural centers in Wendland.

The village is widely known in Germany especially for Pfingstmarkt Satemin taking place here once every year. Around 60 artisans from all over Germany present their work between the old trees on the large central square. Several thousands of visitors come to Satemin on Pentecost.
